23 | miami, florida

i can't remember the last time i celebrated my birthday at home and this year was no different. instead of having what would have been my 3rd annual 21st birthday in vegas with my friends, i decided to celebrate my birthday with aaron. since he lives in dc, we were trying to think of fun places to go that were "halfway" from la to dc. the other condition to the trip was that it had to be a place we've both never been to. we came up with austin and chicago but we thought both cities would be too cold in november so we decided miami! luckily for work, i get a day off for my birthday and aaron doesn't have class on fridays so we were able to go for 3 days. we decided to do airbnb which i was a little hesitant about but it ended up being a really great experience and cheap! aaron arrived late thursday evening and i arrived early friday morning, so i didn't have to deal with the hassle of checking in (thank you aaron). friday & saturday, the weather was perfect -- i couldn't have asked for better weather, but sunday (my actual bday), it poured all day! i wasn't that bummed though since i felt we had done everything we wanted and this just gave us time to relax and hang out. thank you to our lovely airbnb host for letting us check out late!
like all of our trips, it was mostly spent eating and thinking about the next meal. our airbnb was within walking distance of the lincoln road mall which was filled with fun shops and restaurants -- it kind of reminded me of third street promenade in santa monica. we actually ended up doing a lot of walking since we didn't rent a car. the most we walked though was about 20 minutes. i was really surprised by how walkable miami beach was and if we did take uber, it was about $5. overall, i really enjoyed miami beach. aaron is the perfect traveling partner since he is always down to have a good time or just lounge around. this was one of the best birthday weekends :)

delicious empandas and shrimp salad from go-go fresh foods. took us about 20-30 minutes to walk here, but totally worth it! all the workers were really nice and the food was tasty too.

walked over to wet willie's after lunch. i loved my orange and coconut swirl drink while people watching. after our drinks, we walked along the beach and ocean drive.

for dinner we ate at puerto sagua restaurant which i was a little overdressed for but the food was so great! i forgot what each of these was but one of them was oxtail. it also came with a side of rice and beans which were also delicious. since i was wearing heels, we took an uber which was only $5. after dinner i headed to sephora for the vib sale and then we went to go see big hero 6 :)

the next morning we ate brunch at oliver's and then went to starbucks to get my free birthday drink. they were giving out samples of one of their holiday drinks and it came in this super cute mini red cup!

after brunch, we walked to south beach where we just hung out and took a couple of pictures. i was so surprised by how clear and blue the water was. i'm forever scarred by la's brown beach water. if only we had our bathing suits on!

before dinner, we decided to take a little nap (what's new?). we had dinner on ocean drive at a fish called avalon. it hard to tell in the photo but the portions were huge here! i love how almost all of the restaurants have outdoor seating so we were able to enjoy the music and liveliness of south beach. also, the food comes out so fast in miami beach!

we didn't really know where to go out after dinner so we just walked along ocean drive and came across this outdoor club that was blasting music. we thought, "why not?" the drinks were expensive but the crowd was super fun.

we were a bit hungover the next morning but we managed to still make our reservation for yardbird southern table & bar. i loved the sweet hot sauce that came with the fried chicken. midway in our meal, it started to pour so we decided to stall a little until the rain stopped. after brunch we did some last minute shopping at laduree and kiko at lincoln road mall. by the time we got back to our room, it was pouring again -- forever grateful for the late check out!

some last minute birthday treats in the coolest laudree box ever before heading out to our 9 p.m. flights.

thank you miami beach for a memorable weekend! such an awesome city where you'll find people eating past midnight and home of the smallest ants i've ever seen. until next time!
